Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck): What To Expect

Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) is a procedure performed to improve the appearance of your waist. It most commonly remedies the changes seen in this area that occur from child bearing and weight loss.

Dr. Fischer has performed this procedure hundreds of times over his 33-year career.

Preparing for Your Tummy Tuck

When getting a tummy tuck, you’ll first talk to Dr. Fischer about your aesthetic goals and current medical health conditions including previous abdominal surgeries that could impact the procedure. He will show you pre and post-op pictures of other patients, do a physical exam, discuss expectations, and provide literature that will help you understand the surgery and suggest a course of action that is safe and will achieve your aesthetic goals.

Once you are comfortable with what to expect, we will schedule your surgery and you will return for a preop visit to review instructions to help make your recovery uneventful.

Surgical Procedure

Typically, this surgery is an outpatient process that requires general anesthesia.

Dr. Fischer removes most of the skin and fat between your belly button and the top of your pubic region. From this cut, he then tightens the skin and muscle with sutures to achieve the shape that you want. The sutures are dissolvable so there is no need for suture removal later. Liposuction is sometimes used to help with contouring the area. Expect the procedure to take 2-3 hours and to wake up an hour later.

Recovering From Surgery

After surgery, you will have a waterproof surgical dressing on the incision site that will protect the area when you shower and might have tubes along the side of your body to drain blood and fluids. You will need pain medication for about three days and there will be restrictions in your physical activity to allow you to heal properly.

Dr. Fischer fully understands the unique demands of abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) in Milford, CT, and will do whatever he can to help you.
